The subject of physiology is the basis of the practice of medicine, and a firm understanding of its principles is essential for the physician. This book is intended to assist a student preparing for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step One. BRS physiology is a brief review of key physiological principles and is intended to help the student remember the subjects taught during the first and second years of medical school. . It is not intended to replace comprehensive textbooks or course syllabuses, although the student may find it as a useful supplement to physiology and pathophysiology courses.
BRS Physiology General Overview
The material in BRS physiology is organized by organ system into seven chapters. The first chapter reviews the general principles of cellular physiology. The remaining six chapters review the major organ systems – neurophysiology, cardiovascular, respiratory, kidney and acid-base, digestive, and endocrine physiology.
Difficult concepts are explained gradually, concisely and clearly with appropriate illustrative examples and sample problems. Several clinical correlations are included so that the student can understand physiology in relation to medicine. An integrative approach is used, when possible, to explain how organ systems work together to maintain homeostasis. More than 130 full-color illustrations, flowcharts, and more than 50 tables help the student visualize the material quickly and help with long-term retention. The appendices contain “Basic Physiology Topics for USMLE Step 1”, “Basic Physiology Equations for USMLE Step 1” and “Normal Blood Values”. Questions that reflect the content and format of the USMLE Step 1 are included at the end of each chapter and in a comprehensive test at the end of the book.Â
These questions, many of which are clinically relevant, require problem-solving skills rather than direct recall. The questions are accompanied by clear and concise explanations and guide the student through the right steps of thinking.
The questions can be used as a pre-test to identify weaknesses or as a post-test to determine mastery. Particular attention should be paid to a comprehensive examination, because its questions integrate many areas of physiology and concepts relevant to pathophysiology and pharmacology.
